No Meeting This Friday
Join Us for Thirsty Thursday at Louisiana Bistreaux

There's no Rotary meeting this Friday morning. Instead, join us Thursday night - October 17 - at the Louisian Bistreaux, 237 Perimeter Center Parkway NE, Unit H-11. Atlanta GA 30338 (actually Dunwoody). The photo here - and the PDF attached show how to enter the garage. Mark Galvin's notes that go with the photo say: "Enter parking garage here (where the red arrow marks the way). Once in the building, immediately turn left. Look for Louisiana Bistreaux signs." You can click the link here for a bigger copy of the photograph that you can print.

Whiskey Raffle Update
2024 Rotary Club of Dunwoody Whiskey Raffle is Live!

Help us raise money to support our work in the community! How? By sharing the link  and the postcards for our annual Whiskey Raffle with your friends, family, colleagues, neighbors, and everyone else in the community - https://whiskey-raffle.com/. Raffle tickets are $25 each and we will only sell 400 tickets. On raffle night, we will pull six tickets from the raffle bin and award six prizes.

Each week we will highlight one of the prizes to be awarded. This week's highlighted prize is the American Craft Distilleries package - including bottles donated by John Vinyard, Matthew Johnson, Neal MacDonald, and ShortBarrel Bourbon, plus a $50 gift certificate to Culinary Dropout.

Making a Difference
Our Dunwoody Police Foundation Donation Saves a Life

Our club recently gave the Dunwoody Police Foundation a $5,000 donation. The money was used to equip every squad SUV with anti-choking devices called Life Vacs. In August. Sergeant Nelson responded to a call where an 18 month old toddler was chocking. Using his Life Vac, Sergeant Nelson was able to dislodge a peanut butter pretzel, saving the child's life.

This is just one example of what our club's support of the Dunwoody Police Foundation means to our community. Thank you for helping make a difference.

Getting to Know You
Rick Otness: Helping 5th Graders Be Smarter

Rick Otness's journey with our Rotary club began in 2007, sparked by a friendly obligation to Fred Brandt, his fellow advocate in forming the city of Dunwoody. Little did he know that meeting would lead to 17 years where he has significantly shaped our club's identity and impact. Rick is a past president and served on the board for 14 of his years with the club. He has been involved in nearly every club activity in the past few years. Last year, he received the William M. Mulkey Greater Giving Award in recognition for all he's done - and continues to do - for the club.

Looking ahead, Rick wants to see the club expand our educational initiatives to make a more significant impact on local middle and high schools. His passion for education shined through his favorite club activity, the Quiz Bowl, where he regularly engaged with local middle school students and hosted the annual "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" competition during a club meeting.

Rick went to work for UPS after earning his MBA degree from Harvard. He helped UPS start their marketing department, relocated with them from Connecticut to the Dunwoody area, and then after 22 years of service, accepted a buyout offer that allowed him to step away from the corporate world at just 45 years old. When not dedicated to Rotary, Rick enjoys life in Dunwoody with his wife Maureen and their son, Eric.

Rotary Means Business
Join Us Next Week for Rotary Means Business

The next social for Rotary Means Business is Tuesday, October 22 at Politan Row at Ashford Lane, near Perimeter Mall.  It is a great opportunity to network with fellow Rotarians. Please use this link to register if you want to be on the registration list. And mark your calendar now for our November 26 social - also at Politan Row.

We are looking for people to help plan our events and take on occasional projects. for Rotary Means Business. Let Carter know if you are interested in helping - or if you'd like more information on this networking group.

Service Opportunity
Would You Like to Join Our Volunteer Team at Anchor Place?

As some of us have experienced firsthand, our volunteers at Anchor Place make a real difference for our neighbors whose lives are touched by dementia and social isolation - and we walk away with new friends and a smile on our faces. Please think about joining our growing community by registering for our next volunteer training on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 10:00am-12noon at Anchor Place, located at St. Patrick's Episcopal Church in Dunwoody. This will be the last training for 2024. More information about volunteering can be found on our website or email Mary Cohen with questions.

Toys for Tots
Are There Really Only 58 Shopping Days to Christmas?

No ... don't panic, that's only true for your Toys for Tots Shopping. Dunwoody Rotarians and their families have provided generous support in the past - bringing bikes, toys, dolls and craft kits to the annual holiday luncheon to help the Marines with their annual Toys for Tots program. This year is no exception - and the luncheon falls on December 13. So take time to mark your calendar for the holiday luncheon now and head for Costco, Target, Amazon or other favorite shopping places!

Thanks to Jim and Janet Glass for heading up this operation!
