No Meeting This Friday
Enjoy Your Labor Day Holiday

Observed the first Monday in September, Labor Day celebrates the social and economic achievements of American workers. The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.

Do you know when Labor Day became an official holiday? And which State was first to recognize it as an official holiday?  New York was the first state to introduce a bill, but Oregon was the first to pass a law recognizing Labor Day, on February 21, 1887. During 1887, four more states – Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York – passed laws creating a Labor Day holiday. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday.

Many of us look at Labor Day weekend as the "end of summer," even though that's still a few weeks away. In any event, NO meeting this Friday - enjoy family, food and fun this Labor Day weekend and we'll see you Friday, September 5.

Whiskey Raffle Update
Whiskey Tasting This Thursday! And So Much More!

This is your weekly update on the Whiskey Raffle! As a reminder, thanks to your generosity, our 2024 raffle sold all 400 tickets and raised $10,000 for community projects. This year, we’re aiming even higher—$25,000.

Whiskey tasting Thursday this week for club membership!

This week on Thursday is our first whiskey tasting. It’s our dress rehearsal and strategy session for the rest of the tastings we’ll perform across Dunwoody aimed at driving ticket sales ticket sales outside of our membership. This first is free and open to club membership (and close friends)! It will be at Neal MacDonald and Amy Popp’s place at Arabelle Perimeter (1110 Hammond Drive, #721). We have a few spots left but seats are limited and you must RSVP to Neal MacDonald before Thursday!

This first month of September is all about the prize pool… we need bottles!

Last year we had 20 bottles forming five prize pools. This year, we’re looking to double our prize pool so we need to get close to doubling our bottles. At this time, we have four promised and committed donations… we’re 10% of the way there. Let’s close that gap!

Whiskey enthusiasts hide among your friends and neighbors. Ask them! Prestige and collectible bottles will be the backbone of our success. Questions? Ask Neal MacDonald (whiskey nerd) or Dave Burr (sensible planner).

(And yes… we do accept spirits of quality that aren’t necessarily whiskey!)

This is how our major fundraiser for the fall is shaping up:

  • Phase 1: Prize collection (to be completed by October 1). we now have 4 of our anticipated 40 bottles promised… let’s go!
  • Phase 2: Sell tickets (goal is to sell all 1,000 tickets by November 15): we’ll be priced at $25/ticket or 5 tickets for $100. Sales are open now but we will begin marketing in earnest in October.
  • Spread the word! Encourage friends, family, and colleagues—whiskey enthusiasts are never hard to find (they brag). Every ticket sold brings us closer to our $25,000 goal. And whiskey might just be a great way to introduce people to Rotary.
  • And Lastly, SAVE THE DATE! Thirsty Thursday, November 20! We’re targeting that last Thursday before Thanksgiving for the main event itself.

Sunshine Revisited
Do You Know Who We Were Talking About?

During our District Governor's visit last week, we asked you to identify Rotarians based on a short summary of facts. Read on for some of the questions along with photo hints that run left to right starting at the top. [read more]

Sunshine Revisited #2
And More Member Trivia for Your Labor Day Holiday ...

These Rotarians all have something in common ... Ron Barden, Jay Brackman, Denise Brodsky, David Cesar, Mark Galvin, Ed Holliday, Mike Irvin, Ken Levy, Russell Reams, Bill Thiele, Michael Wilensky. Do you know what it is?

  • Yes, they are all Dunwoody Rotarians
  • And the answer we're looking for, they all belonged to another Rotary Club before their most recent tour of membership in Dunwoody.

Did you know two of them were also members in Dunwoody before? Russell Reams and Michael Wilensky.

Ask these Dunwoodians where they were members before. And, as we continue our efforts to build membership, keep your ears open for people who have been Rotarians and would like to join again in Dunwoody. Peter Sherman would love for that to happen more!
