Celebrate Dunwoody Rotary's 35th Birthday at Marlowe's This Thursday, April 18!

On Thursday, April 18, we invite you to join us at Marlowe's in Dunwoody Village for an informal celebration of our birthday! Festivities begin at 5:30 pm. Come and share memories; bring people you know who might like to join us for the future. We'll provide appetizers and a birthday cake plus your first drink is on us! Please RSVP to Cathie Brumfield at cbrumfield@magnoliafinancial.com. There will be no regular Friday meeting this week, so join us at Marlowe's on Thursday instead!

Our 35 years have been a whirlwind of FUN, FELLOWSHIP and MAKING A DIFFERENCE! This week's photo (from our 25th anniversary book)… our three Past District Governors - Robert Hall and Bill Woulfin in their "Back to the Future" District Conference garb and Bill Mulkey at the Laurel Ridge Elementary School fall festival! Dunwoody worked at the festival and helped build an outside classroom at Laurel Ridge when John Carr's wife Jackie was Principal there.

Happy Birthday Dunwoody ... Looking Back to 1984-85

Past President Gary Lane with David H. Baker, the "father" of Dunwoody Rotary

As we celebrate our 35th birthday this month and over the rest of our birthday year, we want to look back at the people, projects and events that make the Rotary Club of Dunwoody and our Family of Rotary special. William (Bill) Davenport was our Charter President - serving from April 25 to June 30, 1984. For our first full Rotary year as a club, our President was Robert (Bob) Lewis. His officers included:

  • Teak Pacetti, Treasurer and President Elect
  • Ernie Davis, Vice President
  • J. Robert Gates, Secretary
  • E. Robert Greenway, Sergeant-at-Arms
  • Bill Davenport, Immediate Past President
  • David Baker ("father" of our club from Sandy Springs - pictured with Gary Lane), Club Service A
  • Gary Lane, Club Service B
  • Clayton West, Vocational Service
  • Bill Mulkey, Community Service
  • Joe Skelton, International Service

The Rotary International theme for the year was Share Rotary and Serve People. In that spirit, the new Dunwoody Club:

  • Chaired the DeKalb Rotary Council's "Arrive Alive - Safe Ride Home" program for high school proms and graduations
  • Started a Vocational Service essay contest, awarding $3,000 in scholarships
  • Grew membership from 35 to 51 … with Ed Godshall, Chris Gutschenritter, Lang Wooddy and Pat McMahon among our year one inductees.

In a letter to club members at year-end, President Bob said: "Our accomplishments were the result of individual commitment from every member, the untiring effort of our Board, the excellent performance of our committees and the all-important support of our families."

Dunwoody 2019 Polio Campaign Underway

The Rotary Club of Dunwoody has supported Rotary International's initiative to eradicate polio with our hearts, hands and checkbooks since that effort started. Charter member Bob Mingus became the first Dunwoody Rotarian to receive a Paul Harris Fellow for Polio. PDG Robert and Charlene Hall, Roy Wise and Past President Laura Kann have all participated in National Immunization Days in India. And last year, thanks to the generosity of our members, we raised $40,000 and took our total giving on behalf of Polio to more than $150,000.

Our 2019 Polio Plus campaign goal is raising $25,000. This is part of Rotary International's three-year campaign to help get across the finish line with Polio eradication (we are in year 2 of that campaign). Rick has asked that all members consider donating at least $100 so that we can quickly and easily reach our goal.

Contributions count toward individual recognition as a Paul Harris Fellow of Major Donor to The Rotary Foundation. That makes this a wonderful time to review your Paul Harris Fellow status. Remember, we have a lot of matching funds. If you’re getting close to a new level of PHF, we can double your contribution and help you reach your goal. All Rotarians want to be Major Donors. Let us help you get there. If you have questions, please reach out to Rick Woods or PDG Bill Mulkey.

Help Us Celebrate a Dunwoody Mother's Day Tradition ... the Dunwoody Arts Festival - May 11 - 12, 2019

The Dunwoody Art Festival, has become a beloved Dunwoody community tradition, attracting 40,000 attendees and 155 artists annually. It certainly is “the place to be” in Dunwoody on Mother’s Day weekend. Join with fellow Rotarians, family members and friends to be part of this significant community event! You may join us:

  • As an·ARTIST AMBASSADOR on Saturday, 5/11 from 5:00 – 8:00 am - or some part of that shift. Dunwoody Rotarians welcome the artists to Dunwoody and assist with the transformation of Dunwoody Village into a very cool Artist’s Market. Heavy lifting is NOT required for this volunteer assignment. Your time, energy and friendly hospitality will help the festival get off to an excellent start! To do this, please contact Kathy Brandt, 404-797-0705, kgbrandt1@comcast.net.
  • In telling the “Rotary Story” to the community at our RCD exhibit space for a two-hour shift … on Saturday, May 11 between 10:00am and 6:00 pm or on Sunday, May 12 between noon and 5:00 pm. To do this, contact Ardy Bastien, 516-967-7619 or ardy11422@yahoo.com and indicate your preferred shift.

The Rotary Club of Dunwoody (RCD) is recognized as one of six “Leading Sponsors” for this community event, thanks to our amazing volunteer turnout for the last 10 years

Our participation and support for this event gives our club significant community visibility during the eight weeks leading up to the event, as well as the opportunity to “tell the Rotary Story” to thousands of attendees in our Rotary booth.

We hope to see you at the Dunwoody Arts Festival! It's a great opportunity to support the community, build our image in Dunwoody and grow support for the good work we do!

Thanks!

Kathy Brandt and Ardy Bastien

Celebrate a Happy New Year in July

Mark your calendar now for the July 4 celebration in Dunwoody … the parade will celebrate Dunwoody's 10th year as a city and the club will celebrate 35 years of Making a Difference and the start of a new Rotary year! The photos here show Fourth of July's past - from our 25th anniversary book!

Our new members over the past year - supported by Past Presidents Jennie Stipick and Jackie Cuthbert, will be building a float and we hope many of you will help with float building and consider walking in the parade.

More details will follow soon, but we'd like to see you and your families there - if just to stop by and say Happy Birthday and Happy New Year!
