This Week's Speaker on Zoom ...
Brent Walker, Parks Director, City of Dunwoody Parks & Recreation

Grab your coffee or tea and the breakfast of your choice and join us this Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. on Zoom to hear more about the work of the City of Dunwoody's Parks and Recreation Department. You can join the Zoom meeting at https://zoom.us/j/99732258910 or if you have the Zoom app on your phone or computer, you can go there and type in the meeting ID: 997 3225 8910. Brent Walker serves the City of Dunwoody as Parks Director, City of Dunwoody Parks & Recreation. Walker joined the City of Dunwoody staff is 2010 with a mandate to develop policies and procedures for the creation of a new parks and recreation department. Through his leadership the City of Dunwoody has developed a comprehensive Master Plan for parks and recreation activities with a reach of over 200 acres of park property and has made significant progress in plan implementation. Walker visits with the Rotary Club of Dunwoody to discuss the process of plan development, report implementation status and invite further input on the future of Dunwoody Parks and Recreation assets.

Walker has extensive experience working with communities to help them develop and leverage their parks and recreation assets to enhance quality of life and economic vitality. Prior to joining the City of Dunwoody, Walker has served as District Coordinator and, earlier, Recreation Coordinator of Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation, in Lawrenceville. He has served with similar focus the communities of Pine Lake, Decatur, Georgia and Auburn Alabama.

Walker lives in Decatur with his wife Laura and three children; Noah, Eliza and Charlie. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Art from Auburn University. He was the recipient in 2008 of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Gold Medal Award, for noteworthy accomplishments leading and serving communities with a focus on arts and recreation.

DeKalb Rotary Council
Congratulations to Louise S. Barden

Congratulations to Louise Barden for being recognized as this year’s recipient of the DeKalb Rotary Council’s William M. Mulkey “Show Rotary Cares” award. The award was announced by Past Assistant Governor Suzanne Sykes on behalf of our own PDG Bill Mulkey who was not able to be in attendance.

For the past 20 years, the "Show Rotary Cares" Award has been earned by a Rotarian from each Rotary club in DeKalb County for their exemplification of Rotary service, dedication, and commitment. The RI President’s Theme originated in 1997 when Glenn W. Kinross of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, served as RI President and Bill Mulkey served as Rotary District 6900 Governor.

To qualify, a Rotarian must demonstrate commitment and action in all “Avenues of Service.” This award is given in honor of PDG Bill Mulkey for his many years of leadership and service to the DeKalb Rotary Council and Rotary International District 6900.

Louise has led the GRSP Leadership Weekend and our international grants through The Rotary Foundation for several years, and done ever so much more in the spirit of Rotary. She certainly deserves this award and our club’s appreciation for her extraordinary example of "Show Rotary Cares." The entire theme is "Show Rotary Cares ..... for your community, for our world, and for its people."

Join the District Celebration - June 20 in Columbus

District 6900 is celebrating this weird yet wonderful year of Rotary in Columbus on June 20 - with a brief luncheon and awards ceremony. The district will recognize the Clubs of the Year - and Clubs of the Decade, as well as other achievements. To join the celebration, register now on the District Website.

Our own PDG Bill Woulfin is working on this event and spoke to the issue of safety related to COVID-19 and this event in the June District Newsletter, "I know that there is a lot of concern in getting together because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but I assure you, that everything is being done for this event with the safety of all of our Rotarians taken into consideration. We are operating within the constraints of the latest rules set down by Governor Kemp. We are adhering to these guidelines as the minimum."

DeKalb Rotary Council
Celebrating Teachers of the Year and a Rich Part of Dunwoody History

This week, the DeKalb Rotary Council held the teacher appreciation and awards event that had been scheduled for March - online via Zoom rather than our traditional annual breakfast meeting with all the DeKalb County clubs. PDG Bill Mulkey has already congratulated Louise Barden for the Show Rotary Cares Award. You should also know:

  • Our club nominated Michael Parks for the Bob Grant You are the Key award - presented in honor of a Stone Mountain PDG (who was also an Honorary Member of the Rotary Club of Dunwoody). Mike was nominated for his amazing leadership for Rotary Youth Exchange in District 6900. Each club nominates someone for their service with youth and communities. This year the award went to Wayne Gresham of the Tucker Rotary Club but we're very proud to be able to recognize Mike for his service.
  • Mary Sturken from Dunwoody High School was honored by our Club as Teacher of the Year. Mary is our Interact Club's sponsor and was part of our Service Above Self Scholarship selection committee.
  • Council Chair Caesar Gaiters announced that our own Cathie Brumfield would serve as Council Chair for the 2020-21 Rotary year. Congratulations Cathie!

Dunwoody has a rich history with the DeKalb Rotary Council. We have had seven Council Chairs - Bill Mulkey, Mike Feeney and Jennie Stipick each served as chairs for two years, and Lang Wooddy, Ed Godshall, Kathy Brandt and Gary Lane each served a year. Lorri Christopher is currently serving as Council Treasurer.

Over the years, the clubs in the Council:

  • Supported education - with Teacher of the Year awards, apple distribution to every teacher in a DeKalb County school, and book donations to local schools and libraries
  • Collected medical equipment for distribution to needy individuals in conjunction with FODAC (Friends of Disabled Adults & Children)
  • Created and distributed the I CARE card with a helpline number for youth (under Bill Mulkey's leadership)
  • Sponsored Arrive Alive to transport high school students to and from prom
  • Participated in a park clean-up (under Jennie's leadership)
  • Helped sponsor our GRSP Leadership Weekend.
