David Lee Windecher, Author and Lawyer
David is a trailblazing orator, author and lawyer in the growing movement to end mass incarceration and redress racial inequity in the criminal justice system. In his autobiography The American Dream/HiSstory in the Making, David shares the harsh realities of growing up as an impoverished immigrant on the streets of Miami-Dade County. He was arrested 13 times and spent over 7 months incarcerated as a juvenile. He dropped out of high school and joined a gang for protection. His street name was “Red.” David endured the brutal climate of the lawlessness on the streets by both criminals and the police. All the while he dreamed of becoming a lawyer and fighting for those who don’t have the resources to pay for justice.

Special Olympics Basketball Skills
For more than a decade Dunwoody Rotarians have helped Peachtree Charter Middle School host a Basketball Skills Clinic and Competition for 200+ students representing special needs programs in all DeKalb County middle schools. This year’s event will be hosted by the faculty and staff of Sequoyah Middle School, 3456 Aztec Rd, Doraville, GA 30340.The same event, just a different location.
What will Rotary Volunteers do?
Working in teams of two or three, Rotarian volunteers will help conduct the team competition (as scorekeepers and assistants) and offer encouragement and support to the student participants. Rotary’s presence helps make this event possible for 200+ student and teacher participants.

Why is this event important?
The mission of Special Olympics can be summarized by the following description:“Transforming Lives Through Sports”.Through participation in athletics, Special Olympics athletes learn life skills that transfer to home, community, school, workplace.The rewards from participation as a volunteer for this event are “priceless”.

Where is Sequoyah Middle School?
Sequoyah Middle School is located in Doraville, just off of Shallowford Rd. just inside the I-285, 15-minutes from Perimeter Mall.3456 Aztec Rd., Doraville, Ga 30340.
What relationship does the Rotary Club of Dunwoody have with Sequoyah Middle School?
1)Students and teachers from Sequoyah have always participated in Basketball Skills Day when the event was held at Peachtree Middle School. They have appreciated and benefited from our help at this event.2) RCD’s good partner, Dresden Elementary School, is a feeder school for Sequoyah. Students from Dresden, RCD’s partner for more than 20 years, attend Sequoyah for 6th, 7th and 8th grades.3) In years past, RCD has taught Junior Achievement classes at Sequoyah.

Join Bob Freeman's Efforts to Help Bahama Hurricane Victims
When our own Bob Freeman read about District 6900's approach to disaster relief, he planned a 100-mile bike ride and asked friends and Dunwoody Rotarians to pledge their support. He has raised more than $1,500 through a Go Fund Me account. You can still contribute online - Bob hopes to raise $5,000.
The district team has met and talked with both FODAC www.fodac.org – CEO and Rotarian Chris Brand and MAP International www.map.org – CEO and Rotarian Steve Stirling.Please check their websites for information about these organizations. You are encouraged to donate to the District 6900 Charitable Fund as we raise money to support both of these Georgia organization’s efforts to assist victims of Dorian. FODAC is providing donated medical supplies and equipment but they need money to pay packing and shipping cost. We will receive feedback from FODAC telling us how our money is being spent, and information about where our shipments are going and who the end user of the supplies is.Chris Brand, Past President of the Rotary Club of Stone Mountain has told us he is available for Rotary Club Programs or “pre-programs” of five minutes to tell us about their efforts in the Dorian Disaster relief effort. Steve Sterling, MAP International, is a Rotarian in the Atlanta Rotary Club. MAP International is providing medical packs of medicines approved by the World Health Organization for disaster areas - IEHK (Interagency Emergency Health Kit).These packs cost $15,000.Additionally, MAP provides for other needs including water filters for families using the Sawyer 5-gallon bucket filters – these cost $10 each. Further, they provide Uzima backpack water kits that hold several gallons of water and have a filter built in – these cost $35.During the past weeks since Dorian, MAP International has provided 884 filters to the Bahamas. MAP International is also available for Rotary Club programs. Please contact MAP through its website.
