The Friendly Breakfast Club

July 29, 2026

This Week's Speaker
Chris Brand, CEO, FODAC

Join us this Friday at Maggiano's to hear from Chris Brand, Stone Mountain Rotarian and President of FODAC (Friends of Disabled Adults and Children).

Chris joined FODAC in 1993 as the donations manager. Because of his work to develop new resources for donations as well as expand existing ones, Chris was promoted to executive director of FODAC in 2001 and voted president in 2003.  Chris joined Rotary in 2006 after helping the Rotary Club of Stone Mountain with several wheelchair projects in the Dominican Republic. Since then, he has served as President of the Stone Mountain Rotary Club and Chair of the DeKalb Rotary Council, as an Assistant Governor in District 6900, and currently coordinating disaster relief efforts for Rotary. Chris was named District 6900 Rotarian of the Year in 2016-17, and received the 2015-16 District “Club Builder” award and the 2015-16 Dekalb Rotary Council “You Are the Key” award.

Gianna Wins Jackpot - RYLA and Weekly Drawing

When Charlie and Anita Augello's granddaughter Gianna came to tell us the winning tale of her experience at Rotary Youth Leadership Award camp in Americus, GA, she told us how RYLA had helped her push beyond her comfort zone, have new experiences, and feel more comfortable with public speaking - like her presentation at the club. Little did Giana know sharing her winning RYLA experience would result in more winning - as her ticket was drawn in our weekly Laws of Life Scholarship Drawing and she picked the joker, winning more than $500.

Dunwoody Packs Bookbags for Tapestri

Thanks to a great morning of service on Saturday, organized and managed by President Elect Alison Norris, 95 students served by Tapestri will start school with a backpack full of school supplies unique to their student needs! Rotarians were joined by the Tapestri Team, led by Maya Hasic, and students from Dunwoody Middle School and Dunwoody High School.

Tapestri is an organization that provides opportunities for immigrant and refugee survivors of violence through education, community organizing, direct services, & advocacy to help them reclaim ownership over their lives! You can read more about them at https://tapestri.org.

Thanks to Alison, who does so much work before we ever step foot in the building; her leadership shows in the organization and makes the whole process easy!!

End Polio Now
Remembering Martha Lillard

We often think of Polio affecting only countries like Afghanistan or Pakistan where wild poliovirus cases still persist, but I wanted to highlight the story of an American.

In 1953, five-year old Martha Lillard contracted polio - that was two years before Jonas Salk’s vaccine. Her lungs were soon paralyzed and she began using an iron lung which she used every day until she died. Martha died last month. For over 70 years, she climbed into that iron lung every single night. Her life is a reminder that Polio isn't just a history lesson or an issue in some far away land. And that our financial support and immunization work as Rotarians is still important, to help prevent anyone else from experiencing what Martha did.
