Service, Leadership and the West End

A Conversation with Club President Chris Hempfling

Service was first introduced to Chris at a young age through Boy Scouts, where community service projects gave him regular opportunities to give back. Those experiences helped shape how he leads today.

For Chris, service taught two important lessons: pay attention to what a community actually needs and recognize that everyone has the ability to make a difference.

Service does not always require a grand gesture. Often, it is simply about showing up for a community need, a person or a population that could use support, and believing that your time, effort and presence can make a difference.

As President of the Rotary Club of Atlanta West End, Chris believes service must remain at the heart of our club because it is at the heart of Rotary: Service Above Self.

Our members represent different backgrounds, professions and experiences. When we bring those talents together in service to our local, national and international communities, Rotary’s values move beyond meetings and into action.

Atlanta Streets Alive is a great example. It puts our club directly into the community, allowing us to raise awareness about Rotary, share the work we are doing and have genuine conversations with people who may not know much about our organization.

Most importantly, it strengthens our commitment to the West End.

As Chris puts it, “Our goal is not simply to be a Rotary Club located in the West End. We want to be a Rotary Club that is of the West End, connected to the people, businesses, schools and organizations that make this community special.”
